NLight, the Gothic Rock / Darkwave DIY project of French songwriter, performer, and engineer frelu, delivers the Official Music Video for “One Day”, one of his most favourite tracks from last March’s sophomore album, “Dolor Animae.”
“One Day” reflects on mortality and the fleeting nature of life, contemplating what remains after death. The song’s evolving, asymmetrical arrangement, featuring metal-inspired bass, depressive electric guitars, melancholic synths, and marked percussion, creates an atmospheric tension that mirrors the existential questions posed in the lyrics. The cold, melodically spoken vocals reinforce the somber tone, as the repetitive refrain “everyone must die one day” emphasizes the inevitability of death while prompting reflection on the choices, loves, and dreams that define a life.
Ominous, subtly gritty, dense bass throbs seethe and stoke a shadowy, obsessive and nail-biting aura, punctuated by both clapping and clanking, tightly wound drum patterns, cut by a bleak reiteration of crystalline guitar stabs echoing through a depressing murk where eerie distant wails sorrowful ring underneath stoic baritone vocals, speaking about the importance of everyday decisions through a lens of being present in reality.
In the DIY Official Music Video, NLight walks through a foggy forest while a beautiful black bird flies nearby, syncing symbolically with the soundtrack. Along the journey, a graveyard appears with significant messages engraved on the tombstones, whilst an unkindness of ravens brings more insight into the liminal vision. Light becomes inverted, and at one point, a crow dies, disintegrating into a human skeleton as the thought-provoking lyrics play across the bottom.
