WL//WH Video Of The Day  DEEP BLEAK

Deep Bleak, the East London friendship and musical duo of the Midlands-bred Liam Butler and rural East Germany’s Sarah Neumann, draws influence from Mount Kimbie, PVA, and Boy Harsher as they marry the hauntingly beautiful and the euphoric with biting harshness.

To announce last week’s release of their eponymous self-released debut EP “Deep Bleak” through the London independent label Lost Wisdom, the pair have shared an Official Video by Bryan Lim, Deep Bleak, Amos Tan, and Zulhairi for “Dancing On Broken Bottles”.

The new single “Dancing On Broken Bottles” explores the surreal, everyday bleakness of grief. The track takes elements of alternative electronic projects such as Mount Kimbie and shoves a darkwave post-punk spin on them. Vocals drenched in longing melancholia soar mournfully over erratic, fast-paced electronic drums and bass, ultimately producing a feeling of sad mania. The song was written in collaboration with Nathan Feddo (Jadu Heart, Ama Lou).

A momentum shift between slow heavy dragging gloom and rapid skittering urgency driven by crackling shifting rhythmic patterns, and droning thundering bass tones along with anxious fluttering synth glows, rises and falls around downcast softly sung female vocals, anguishing to keep the flame alive.

Filmed this during a storm in one day all around London with a tiny crew and no budget – just a whole lot of heart, dedication and hard work from a wonderful bunch of people.

The visuals by Bryan Lim, Deep Bleak, Amos Tan, and Zulhairi show Sarah Neumann walking down the London streets in a leather jacket under dizzying camera work to create the feeling of a panic attack. She stops at a pub where Liam Butler, Min Yu, Daniel Humphries, and Natasha Biggs are hanging out and has a vision of herself wearing eerie white eye makeup as she dances in an out-of-control manner. A heady twist ending syncs seamlessly with the psychological soundtrack.

Deep Bleak‘s self-titled debut EP, “Deep Bleak,” is out now, on Cassette & Digital,  via Lost Wisdom.
