WL//WH Track Of The Day: THE SLOW SUMMITS “Dream On”

Track Of The Day   THE SLOW SUMMITS

Linköping‘s finest Jangly Indie Pop escapists The Slow Summits, comprised of Anders Nyberg (Lead vocals/Rhythm guitar/Percussion), Mattias Holmqvist Larsson (Bass guitar/Back. vocals), Karl Sunnermalm (Lead guitar/Acoustic guitar/Harmonica) and Fredrik Svensson (Drums), keep on “Dream On” in the first single from the much anticipated forthcoming debut album, “Every Intention,” due out on July 4th via Subjangle.

As they have always been accustomed to doing, the once “stressed middle class dreamers”, as they dubbed themselves a few years ago with their usual distinctive self-irony, provide us with plenty of thought-provoking hints by referring to some ‘postcards’ from Scotland very dear to both of us.

“Oh, how I wish I was young again”, a clever early twenties chap once mourned. Sure, life was simpler in the early days. Pretty soon, life funnels you into a place where the options are scarce, opportunities are fewer, and chances seem next to none. With the decay of dreams, it’s easy to abide, settle and stay in the rut. Please don’t. Thirty years wiser, the same chap proclaimed, “Possibilities are endless”

Lyrically, “Dream on” reminds us of what it feels like to be young and suggests that keeping your head in the clouds is a good thing.

Brimming with the band’s usual flair and infectious dose of warm pop sensibility, the song nimbly surfs on gentle, sun-dappled waves, radiated by a shimmery, vibrant weave of acoustic guitar strumming, snaking warm bass pulses, and agile drum beats, rippling with echoing and sparkling, wistful melodies, whilst bittersweet vocals layer sad reflections with dreamy longing and a call-and-response chorus to uplift with urges of boundless possibilities.

The Swedish band’s artistry strikes a chord in the heart of the most melancholic and nostalgic British indie-pop heritage, that bridges seamlessly Sarah, Creation, Postcard Records and all around, continues in fine shape.

The Slow Summits’ debut studio album, “Every Intention,” will be released on CD & Digital on July 4th via Subjangle.

Don’t forget to check last May’s The Slow Summits’ archival CD collection, “Yore Songs”, always on Subjangle.
