Fragments Vol. 5 // Reviews
I created the FRAGMENTS column for the summer months when there tends to be less movement with new releases. However, I would like to highlight some notable new records on this summer row. These are the records that I’ve played on the radio and that we enjoy featuring in WL//WH Music Webzine. It is our responsibility to mention these artists who send us their new works, as they have produced some excellent recordings.
- ETTI/ETTA – “Of Two Minds” LP [Self-Released]
Etti/Etta from Italy recently released their brand-new album “Of Two Minds” (June 1) featuring an array of 12 new songs. Raffaella (vocals, bass) and Marcus (guitars, synths, omnichord, and other machines) have created a stunning blend of post-punk and shoegaze soundscapes in their new album, which can be heard from miles away. The completeness of the album and the effort put into its creation are truly impressive. This duo has poured all their talent into this work, resulting in an incredibly beautiful, colorful, and dark yet travel-inspired piece. The album maintains its appeal throughout, featuring the ideal sound for this ambitious project.
- GUINÆPIG – “Anatomy” LP [TONN Recordings]
Guinæpig (aka Balázs Tamoga) from New York published his brand new “Anatomy” LP through TONN RECORDINGS (Belfast) on April 21. On Bandcamp, you will find the following words: “The music of guinæpig brings us on a journey full of electronic twists and turns, driven forward by an energy that propels the listener through a highly charged, atmospheric synth terrain.” Who am I to disagree with that, and what more can I say about this extraordinary (again) album by him? Only that, here Guinæpig offers a new dimension to his synthetic electro-to-techno style in this release, which differs significantly from his previous long-play album. As a longtime fan of his musical creations, I am always eager to hear his new works. I’ll stop talking now—go ahead and press play!
- SUGAR FOR THE PILL – “LUV” LP [Shelflife Records (USA) / Make Me Happy Records (GR)]
Sugar For The Pill (Athens, GR) shoegaze demigods published on May 23 their brand new “LUV” LP via Shelflife Records (USA) and Make Me Happy Records (GR). With ten new experiential tracks created somewhere between America and Athens (GR), this talented band released their sophomore album, which is significantly better than their explosive debut that abruptly launched them to fame (and to the airports). “LUV” LP is more mature, passionate, and measured than their debut. It will always hold significance, regardless of what happens in the future for the band. Achieving what they did with this album, especially following the success of their debut, is nearly impossible—it’s like creating a true sequel that captures the essence of what they initially produced. Admiration by me!
- CRUEL MECHANISED BODY – “Anger and Fear” LP [Self Released]
The debut release “Anger and Fear” (June 21) by Cruel Mechanized Body (Germany) blows me away every time I listen to it. With 4 tracks totalling 29:42, it feels like a long-play release, doesn’t it? It is all a stunning experimental adventure on post-punk, post-rock, darkwave, electronic, and noise music. It is full of content and magical events from beginning to end on this never-ending musical journey. This impressive album features timeless melodies and a perfect sound, promising a bright future. It doesn’t get old on repeat!
- SPIRYT with Kimberly Kornmeier – “Nepal” LP [Self Released]
Jluc Courchet from Toulon (FR) once again created another versatile album together with Kimberly Kornmeier (Bow Ever Down) on the lyrics and vocals (USA). The album features 11 new tracks that dive deep into the darkwave, infused with the singer’s ethnic and pagan influences. It is a cohesive collection filled with impressive music across nearly all the tracks, creating an atmosphere of surprise throughout. The melodies are striking and powerful, enveloping listeners in a captivating experience.
I’ll see you again in the next month with #Fragments_Vol.6.
