WL//WH Video of the Day: NEWDRESS feat. Miss Lucifer “Can’t Control”

Video Of The Day NEWDRESS

NEWDRESS, the experienced Brescia-based Italian Dark New Wave trio formed in 2008, made of Stefano Marzoli (Voice, Synthesizers), Jordan Vianello (Drums), and Andrea Zagna (Bass, Electric guitar), tease the approaching fourth studio album, “ADE [A DANCE ETERNAL]“, due out on September 26th, whose vinyl edition is currently on pre-order via Vrec Music Label, with the new single “Can’t Control”, featuring the vocals of fellow Italian Miss Lucifer (the stage name of Anna Graves, vocalist and synth player for Soft Scent), paired with a video by Riccardo Scalvenzi of Manifesto Collective.

“Can’t Control” represents the difficult relationship with oneself and with the people one loves—the desire to stay connected set against the necessary need for solitude, self-control, and self-destruction.

Blending classic and evocative 80s Italian New Wave fascinations with poignant UK Post-punk undertones,
“Can’t Control” kicks off a crackling, driving rhythmic foundation of crisp, punchy programmed beats along with sharp, bouncy sequencer patterns, enhanced by achingly melancholic, melody-carrying bass lines and eerie atmospheric synths in the background, to engulf a male/female vocal interplay, layering haunted, echoing sorrow with anxious, angry frustration, and wicked, shadowy distortions, evoking a sense of hopelessness and fear at the hands of losing one’s soul.

Once again, the video is helmed by Riccardo Scalvenzi of Manifesto Collective—the director who shapes the visual identity of Newdress. His signature style is unmistakable: an approach in which music, architecture, and landscape intertwine around the theme of transformation. Scalvenzi employs the distinctive technique characteristic of Manifesto Collective—one that deliberately rejects the polished, glossy aesthetic of typical music videos—placing architecture itself at the center stage.

NEWDRESS performs “Can’t Control” with Miss Lucifer at historic and symbolic locations within the Brescia province to bring forth the sentiments of the soundtrack. The Villa Calini Morando in Lograto, a place of decadent beauty and memory, rouses the lyrical content’s conflict between the need for human connection and isolation, whilst The Temple of Bacchus / Parco di Bacco in Rezzato, a symbol of rebirth, hedonism, and Classical ruin, explores the eternal dance between self-control and self-destruction. Suggestive editing furthers the duality and dissociation by using light and shadow, ghostly trace overlays, and double vision to separate and fuse the band members’ spectre-like alters.

NEWDRESS‘ incoming fourth studio album, “ADE [A DANCE ETERNAL]“, will be released on September 26th. The limited vinyl edition is already on pre-order on  Vrec Music Label website.
