After an extremely intensive first year of life, culminating with the debut album “Anxiety art”, via Spanish independent label Pretty Olivia Records, The Reds, Pinks & Purples, the San Francisco-based DIY kitchen pop project of veteran musician Glenn Donaldson, has started the new decade seamless with one single a month, the last one, “I Hope I Never Fall in Love”, is a exquisite slice of emotionally charged dreamy jangle balladry.
Across his long wandering around with different monikers and bands, from Skygreen Leopards to The Art Museums, Birdtree to Giant Skyflower Band, Flying Canon to The Telephone Numbers, Glenn has shown an unceasing distinctive prowess for writing irresistible equally fresh and sunny, elegant and crystalline jingle-jangle melodies, suffused with pleasing restlessness and existential malaise.
Inceptive bright, glassy swells of organ set heartfelt warmth and emotional density, soon joined by lively drumbeats, gentle balmy 6-string-strums infused by subdued entrancing jangly melodies, injecting a breezy, emotive, wistful feel, as sadly angry remorseful vocals, briefly pierced by a high-pitched whining guitar solo atop, brood and croon romantic blues in the aftermath of another failed union.
Broken-hearted bitterness consumes a man’s heart, as guilt and shame over unavoidable human weaknesses reveal, “in the end, it’s always the same.”
