WL//WH is pleased to welcome Zaq Baker, the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based independent multi-instrumentalist, writer, performer and pianist, to the blog with a premiere of the new single “PETULANT,” produced by Hunter Sinclair Hawthorne (Anni XO, afters) and mastered by Alec Ness (Brittany Howard, serpentwithfeet, Paris Texas).
Still fresh from his widely well-received debut novel, “Unspectacular”, “a voice-driven music story that will appeal to consumers of music culture, psychological fiction, family stories, and Asian-American literature”, the artist’s playful yet thought-provoking storytelling is also infused in his eclectic music proposal spanning from Synthpop to high-energy Emo across seven albums/EPs and several singles to date.
In addition to work under his own name, Zaq has been a member of pop-rock quintet Maria and the Coins for over a decade, as well as a full-time member of synth-punk sextet Toilet Rats, indie pop outfit Corzine, theatre-punk band Poison Ivy And The People, Nina Luna’s live band, and more.
“PETULANT” is a catchy modern intimate tune, highlighting the importance of having a trusted support system, softly sung by sad heartfelt vocals that share feelings of worthlessness, emptiness, and anxiety, gliding on a slightly quirky, vibrant, whimsical setting of punchy beats, playful, whimpering keyboard melodies, droning guitar textures and obsessively twinkling, wistful guitar arpeggios, to provide a heartfelt, intense backing before a transformative effect-laden interlude begets an honest confession about fear of intimacy and authentic self-awareness.
Zaq Baker‘s brand new single “PETULANT”, plus the b-side “Theatre Girls Will Break Your Heart” (featuring Corzine)” is due to be released on August 8th.
Keep up with ZAQ BAKER:
