In between live, full band performances in her home base of Melbourne, Indie stalwart Maxine Gillon returns with a DIY video for “The Last Time”, the lead single from the upcoming debut album, “Girl Songs,” due out on October 23, 2025, WL//WH is pleased to premiere.

The song is entirely performed, recorded and produced by herself, mixed by Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Flyying Colours) and mastered by William Bowden (The Church).

“The Last Time” is about endeavouring to accept the ebbs and flows of life and to be grateful to be alive while it lasts. Last year was the first time that several people I’d met and known as adults from my age group had died, and several were mental health-related deaths. As someone who has dealt with clinical depression and anxiety my whole life, I wanted to try and write something positive and genuine while in a relatively stable and healthy place that proposes that everything is in constant flux, good things and bad, and that there’s always going to be a last time for everything, both can be beautiful transformative experiences of worth that will pass and change.Maxine shares

The sentimental paisley-hued, neo-psychedelia-infused “The Last Time” immediately evokes a vibrant, sharply bright aura of introspective soul searching, weaving lush bittersweet, sparkling guitar melodies over low humming bass pulses and a nostalgic arrangement of snappy knocking, and sincopated clapping percussions, while layered sad, angsty vocals gently sing “Have a ball, Despite it all, Don’t spend time worrying.”

I love the aesthetics of the 80s Paisley underground and the Creation Records Scottish indie-pop scene, I wanted something that paid tribute to these and seemed almost like a lost unearthed indie gem from that era. I created the background imagery using authentic ’60s stock footage of flowers and nature.Maxine talks about the inspiration behind the video

The DIY Official Music Video by Maxine Gillon, with shooting and titles by Throne (V, Rebel Yell), showcases the live band Maxine Gillon & The Blue Jeans (Wesley Fahey, Rebecca Nosiara, and Scout Albertine) performingThe Last Time against a colorful psychedelic backdrop reminiscent of the 1960s bright, blurry natural imagery. Flowers, water, and fire combine with mirror image reflections, blurry trace overlays, and a layering of moving and still shots to sync seamlessly with the thoughtful intention of the soundtrack.

Maxine Gillon‘s “The Last Time”, the lead single from her upcoming October 23rd debut album “Girl Songs”, will be released digitally on September 19th.

Maxine Gillon & The Blue Jeans single launch will take place at Shotkickers in Thornbury on Sunday, September 21st. Support is provided by Liam Wright, CCTV & Grace Mitchell.
