PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Barcelona, Spanish 3-piece psychedelic /britpop /noise pop/shoegaze band Lions Constellation “Allison“ third and final single from the upcoming second album “New Moon Rising“ [Shelflife Records (US) / Too Good To Be True Records (FR) / Make Me Happy Records (GR) / Psychocandy Records (ID)]
The third and final single is again a compelling piece of emotionally ridden, sparkly and atmospheric early 90s-inflected Shoegaze melodicism with light psychedelic glimmers. The Ride-tinged “Allison“ swirls out of the gate with energetic, blaring guitar riffs that spiral and bobble with jangling nostalgic melodies, strained by high chiming wistful chords and brief, tight bursts of searing distortion, to carry dreamy, elated vocals of gloomy angst, layered with cool and comforting celestial skies, through a joyous connection that, despite great effort, doesn’t last.
- Washington, DC-based post-punk /new wave /indie rock /dreampop /shoegaze /DIY project Shades of Violet “UnME” single
D.C. project tweaks its distinctive melodic dreamgaze sound, handling a propulsive brooding post-punk bassline, punched by tight drum patterns, and effect-filled shimmery washes of The Edge-like impressionistic atmospheric guitar textures, to rain down on secretive and devotional vocals, blending disharmonious layers of softly sung spoken words, to explore how dueling energies work together to make something beautiful.
- Melbourne ethereal /dream pop /noise pop /shoegaze band Cochlear Kill “Someones” single
With a penchant for creating lush, dreamy, immersive soundscapes, the Aussie band is back with a specimen of its swirly, airy and surreal Shoegaze sound. Entirely captivating from the get-go with washings of shimmery reverb-saturated guitars, silver-lined with sharp crystalline radiance, growing increasingly more intense as a full-bodied distorted riff creeps forward before introspectively descending and then vibrantly ascending into bittersweet reveries alongside whispery, hopeful vocals soaring toward celestial ecstasy to express “There’s someone for everyone”.
