PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Indie pop /dream pop DIY music project of Amsterdam-based music-blogger Estella Rosa and Münster-based multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Voss, NAH… “Trapped” from upcoming EP “Snapshots” [Bureau Platiruma]

The well-respected  Dutch/German sophisti-pop duo returns with an intimate, sentimental jangly tune about time, monotony, and dreams through a lens of loneliness, scars, and darkness. Hypnotic mid-tempo rhythms along with warm bass pulses unfurl with insistent, crisp resonant tinkling threads of wistful guitar melodies, laced with lilting shimmery strums and sheer sidereal keyboard flitters, to sweetly frame a dreamy, shapeshifting, layered vocal interplay, that weaves sincere, grounding male energy in and out of vibrant, worried female gloom to soothe and transform with a support of balanced emotions.

  • Vienna, Virginia shoegaze band Bellweather “space age love song” (A Flock of Seagulls cover)

One of the 80s defining power ballads, the Flock of Seagulls“Space Age Love Song”, that surely evokes thrills of nostalgic feelings for many, only this time Virginia’s shoegazers deftly reinvent it by speeding up the melodies and pounding the drums, adding tons of hazy swarming screechy guitar distortions laced with swirling sharp ringing reverberations, while vibrant, yet ethereal vocals wistfully radiate and echo under a heavy rolling rush of tumultuous emotional energy.

  • Warsaw, Poland dreamgaze /grungegaze /shoegaze four-piece March Dove “Descender” single

The “atmospheric sounds that reach the depths of your soul” promises the Warsaw Grungeaze foursome, and judging from the first two foretastes released so far, they are true to their words. A vibrant balance between intense noise and stirring introspection, fine-pitched abrasive guitar tones and an emotionally ridden, engulfing atmosphere. Sad, fearful female vocals, layered by haunted baritone gloom, drift anxiously over a loud and buzzing, fuzz-laden tapestry, churned by a tumultuous, shuffling drumming, amid painful, wailing high reverberations, rising into a chilling hysteria when surrounded by wicked whispers and distorted echoes, only to plead “please don’t leave me”.
