PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Various Artists // Seattle‘s Tremolo 2024 [Neon Sigh]

Here is the sampler from the just happily ended Shoegaze Music Fest in Seattle, WA, which we gladly supported from afar. Great music, great vibes and brilliant bands, the whole is worth following closely in the coming year, promising exciting news on both fronts.

  • Terre Haute, Indiana grunge /shoegaze band Sleep Keeper “Celes” single

As evidence of the grungegaze leanings that have characterized the year that is about to end, the cavemen shoegazers from Indiana embrace a contemplative yet abrasive atmospheric sound soaked in melancholy. The new single unfolds murky and droning guitar riffs that wave, reverberate and jolt while seething with achingly shimmering and trembling poignancy, to submerge plaintive, distressed vocals, in a heavy haze of distortion, clearing at the end, as a female voice comes into focus.

  • Olavarría, Argentina alternative rock /dream pop /shoegaze band AILLEURS “Feel” single

Blending dreamy shoegaze with harder 90s rock influences, “Feel” is a poetic song about fear, intimacy, and truth delivered through sad angsty vocals, aching under leaden mists of crunchy fuzz-laden, abrasive doom, laced with echoing pain-filled piercing laments and heavy clattering drums, to emerge slightly hopeful with a more prominent backup vocal.

  • Kent, UK-based Northern Soul/Mod /Garage/Power Pop /Psychedelic Pop new project formed by Papernut Cambridge‘s Ian Button (formerly guitarist with Death In Vegas, Thrashing Doves) and Allan Crockford (of The Galileo 7, The Prisoners, The James Taylor Quartet, The Solar Flares etc), The Penrose Web “Leap Of Faith” from upcoming “It’s....The Penrose Web” 4-track EP 7″ [A Fool’s Paradise / Gare du Nord Records]

I can’t figure out how many times I’ve seen Allan Crockford live in the remote past between The Prisoners, James Taylor Quartet, and Prime Movers, all marked in some way my musical path, most of all an adventurous The Prisoners provincial gig in Bra by the way; I can’t say the same for Ian Button, even if I attended a 90s London show of the early Death In Vegas incarnation. Consequently, I could only be intrigued by the duo’s new songwriting partnership that promises soulful kaleidoscopic sound suggestions. The first foretaste oozes crisp and energetic mod grooves and 60s-tinged tuneful harmonies, harking back around 1983-84, while taking us to a “Leap of Faith” built on a pyramid scheme of dreams.
