PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • London-based dream pop/ shoegaze band sadplanet “Walk” single

The promising newcomer UK five-piece concocts dreamy shoegaze laced with crepuscular and reflective tones, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination. Their third single adds textural ambient and mesmeric post-rock elements, to explore the point in a relationship when one person sees through the façade of another. Introduced by an atmospheric, subtly strained, shimmering and ethereal introspective interlude, “Walk” blossoms into urgent, stumbling loose percussions, layered with ghostly synth swathes and both spatial and chilly, soaring guitar lines, surrounding sad angelic vocals with emerging flows of emotional strength.

  • Cambridge, UK 60s /Beat /Mod /Northern Soul /Indie Pop group The New Fools “We Love the Sun” split 7″ single with Berlin‘s The Groovy Cellar

I’ve always tried to balance my shadowy side with the brighter one, at the same time I’ve never been orthodox in regard to music, thus in my record collection both The Cure or Joy Division than The Style Council or Makin’ Time can seamlessly coexist. Perfect fit for this early September day the band invites all to bask in the healing rays of sunshine where upbeat tight rhythms, energetic guitar riffs, and swirling brassy horns blow uplifting melodies with fluting glows, carrying heartfelt vocals and gentle cheery back-ups into a warm immersive outflow of shared joy.

  • Bellingham, WA indie rock /jangle pop duo Michael & Virginia (formerly of The Mantles), aka Tangle Map “Cut You in Two (DEMO)” single

In the early 00s, it was extremely unusual, at least for me, to buy records by mail order overseas, either due to the risky customs fees or the excessive postage costs and long waiting times. For this reason, I vividly remember the amazing 7″ single from 2009 by Bay Area garage indie pop group The Mantles, later revisited by fellow musician Ty Segall, for the still active Bay Area label Mt. St. Mtn. Precisely two ex-Mantles, the frontman and guitarist Michael, also known as Michael O., and the drummer Virginia have dropped, under the new Tangle Map alias, a couple of raw demos in which they alternate the lead vocal, both conjuring a sublimely infectious breezy, tinny, and noisy slanted jangly pop songwriting, equally scrappy and melodic, as we have become accustomed to.
