PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Los Angeles post-grunge /space rock /shoegaze four piece Sidewave “Big Whisper” 1st single from upcoming third album “Dispel”

Around seven years since their Hum-influenced second LP, Denver space rock outfit returns with a new single to herald an upcoming third album. A sharply calibrated immersive atmospheric track of introspective, melancholic moods, imbued with visceral, emotive intensity that seamlessly blends with powerful yet airy, lush distorted guitar textures. Lively, shifting drums relentlessly fuel hypnotic, sprawling, fuzz-drenched riffs, intertwining with stirring, glistening synth layers, floating through invigorating buzzy crashing tidal waves, and piercing leads, toward vast, sidereal expanses, on which dreamy, sad vocals achingly long for time to slow down.

  • Bloomington, Indiana four piece shoegaze /dream pop band Ensifera “Shadows” 2nd single

The wholly captivating second single by the newcomer Bloom-based dreampop foursome stirs up a vibrant rush of back-and-forth emotions, unfolding a gently abrasive, sparkling cradle of sharp guitar riffs drowned in reverb, to subtly screech around wistful, piercing female vocals, smoothly soaring into high quivering flutters, before fading into a bittersweet, whimsical coda spun by an offbeat, slow-tempo carousel shrouded in nostalgic fairground organ motifs, to explore the heartbreak of loving an unstable person.

  • Oxnard, CA C86 /jangle /indie-pop /rock band led by Adrian Alatorre Pillado, Sea Lions “Head In The Clouds” first single from the upcoming sophomore album “Another POP! Music” [YAY! Records]

About a decade and a half after their acclaimed 2011 debut on Slumberland Records, the Californian group, led by Adrian Alatorre Pillado, sets the tone of the upcoming second LP with a captivating 60s-infused soulful bright power pop song that releases a summery swath of fizzing and expressive sparkling strummed guitar tones that sways alongside wistful, irritated male vocals, layered with high airy heartfelt harmonies, briefly swerving in sweeping wah-wah frequencies, to tell a friend to get their head out of the clouds and take action in the world, “Don’t let the right time pass you by.”
