Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – FEBRUARY #07-23

The Avengers Season 5 Episode 9 – The Correct Way to Kill – Charles Crichton – (1967)

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Melbourne, Australia synth-pop/dream pop DIY one-girl-project of Nat Chippy, AKA Japanese Heart Software “Cyanide” single

It’s always a real aural pleasure to every new release from the Melbourne DIY pop artist and the brand new single is no exception. Opaque, angsty auras revolve around urgent strummed guitars and glistening wistful melodies, underpinned by warm pulsing bass lines and perky drum beats, whilst dreamy, nervous vocals inject dopamine and “Cyanide” into a starry-eyed realm of disenchanted romance.

  • Hattiesburg, Mississippi surf rock /shoegaze /dream pop solo project  Beach Novels “Hold My Head” single.

Although it may sound like a nostalgic love letter of sorts for dreamy and melancholic New Wave and Indie Pop/Rock sounds from the 80s and 90s peppered with shimmery jangle and misty summery vibes, the Mississippi singer-songwriter reinvigorates the whole with a solid songwriting prowess, distinctive melodic quality, and straightforward heartfelt passion, that could easily fit in the up-and-coming steadily growing Spirit Goth roster style. The new single “Hold My Head” stirs a restless haze to veil fluttering icy-bright synth whirls, steady hypnotic drums, warm pulsing bass lines, reverb-filled sparkling guitar melodies and distorted aching soaring leads, whilst angsty, urgent vocal obsessions cast dramatic echoes into a tumultuous disarray of disenchanted broods.

  • Philippines indie-pop music alchemists from Manila, Cinéma Lumière “Sunday” off V/A Popscene Manila label‘s compilation album “I Think I Need A New Heart” as well included in the band’s upcoming album, “What’s life without whimsy?”

It’s been nearly two and half years since we featured the Filipino band’s second single in 2020, the Manila based Twee Indie Pop alchemists are back on folds with one of their distinctive graceful and bittersweet melodic tunes spinning around vibrant enticing romantic airs of swaying strummed guitars laced with glistening jangly guitar melodies, and tinkling keys to carry gorgeous high-dual male/female ecstatic vocal harmonies, through a beautiful “Sunday” morning to evoke feelings of happiness and love. Check out as well the new 10th compilation by Popscene MNL label, packed with 23 international pop bands to discover.
