PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Rennes, France indie rock /psych pop quartet BOPS “Seagulls” single [Howlin’ Banana Records]
Fresh from signing with the dynamic quality indie label Howlin’ Banana Records, the Breton quartet’s surreal new single uses, lyric-wise, a flying squadron of noisy seagulls as a metaphor to explore the societal rift between gray delusional and narrow black and white thinking, while fanciful Beatles-style Baroque, Psychedelic flickers, flutters through the lush melancholic chimes of tinkling piano keys and resonant and high-pitched guitar tones, to swirl around moody atmospheric vocals, shifting between sad dreamy introspection and angry aggressive desire, to mesmerize with equally nostalgic and fresh melodic flair.
- Clare, Australia jangle /indie rock-pop solo project Treechangers “St. Cecilia” 2nd single from the upcoming “Symphonie Fantastique” EP
Amidst a fidgety spin of new monikers, the latest and successor of Bedroom Holiday, Treechangers, seems to embrace Joel Carr‘s more introspective singer-songwriter-like side. His latest dispatch is a daydreaming song about an old derelict church 15 to 20 minutes north of a town of only 300 people, haunted by a man who struggled from monomania. A free-flowing, emotionally-led stream of sweetly rippling, shimmery guitar chords stirs nostalgia and matts the imagination of vibrantly wistful, airy male vocals, gently and thoughtfully radiating through soft, surreal waves of sad sunlight.
- Mechelen-based Italo–Belgian 5-piece dream pop /indie-rock /shoegaze band Maquillage “Moon” single
The Belgian shoegaze quintet back to explore atmospheric and melancholic, lush electronic-laden dream-pop soundscapes, as in last year’s “Cosmic Circles”, with a late night confession about the quiet, haunting realization of a love that never truly took off, builds an anxious, sad ethereal realm woven with stumbling percussions, warm pulsing bass lines, muted guitars and lavish, glittering icy synth chords, shivering over both wistful and restless, dreamy female vocals, drifting between desire and illusion, whilst repeating “we never really went to the moon” into an eerie transformation finale of ghostly echoes and weeping celestial cries.
