Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips –  JANUARY 2024 – #02-24

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Maine twee /shoegaze /dream pop /indie pop band Field Studies “The Rougarou” from the 10″/7″ EP “The Rougarou”

Since its bygone cycling cover artwork, the debut demo EP from Maine-based 4-piece immediately grabbed the attention of many indie pop devotees for six nuanced expressions of hazy yet sheer lo-fi melodic charms, nestled between dreamy jangly indie pop, light shoegazey textures and gentle folk veins, somehow between The Sundays and 10,000 Maniacs. The band is back with a 3-tracker vinyl comprised of refined studio versions of 3 tunes from the original version, and the one that stands out most is the title track “The Rougaru”, namely a curse bestowed upon a sinful soul during lent, beautiful heartfelt clear vocals deliver romantic warnings gliding atop an intoxicating swaying backdrop of nimble drum beats, snaky warm bass pulses, wandering wistful crystalline guitar melodies, and glowing icy keyboard stabs; timeless exquisite melodies that you can’t help but listen to on repeat.

  • Detroit, MI 3-piece noise /shoegaze band Harper “Vez” from the debut EP “Robot Beautiful”<

Ended up in the spam, and I apologize for it, the debut EP from Harper, an elusive three-piece Shoegaze band from Detroit, who deliver a both moody and atmospheric, guitar-swollen and fuzz-laden 90s charged sound, that builds, melancholically evocative yet subtly cathartic, warm enveloping and buzzing cascading waves of abrasive yet corroborating reverb-drenched distortion, to overwhelm lost dreamy vocals with intense sways of emotional longing.

  • Swedish indie-pop duo founded in 1990 by Karlstadt‘s Erik Bergqvist & Christian Gustafsson, aka Victorian Tin “Window in the Sky” new single

Founded in the early 90s, the Swedish duo didn’t kick the habit of writing exquisite and deeply romantic jangle-strewn Indie Pop songs, as the captivating brand new single that pulses with the stark intensity of a dead, but hard-to-end romance, through the spicy emotive flow of steady crisp percussions, lithe warm bass lines, light lilting shimmery strums and obsessive wistful crystalline guitar melodies, shrouded in distorted mists, to propel prominent angsty vocal croons through a poignant weeping outflow of evocative painful piano keys.
