Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JUNE 2024 – #25-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Hamilton, ON five-piece shoegaze /new wave /indie rock band, Capitol “Your Heart is Everywhere” lead single from the sophomore album, “Sounds Like a Place” via Meritorio Records
The Canadian group describe themselves as an “Indie band” in their biography, and rightly so, somehow well aware of the atypical nature of their imaginative nuanced songcraft, in not giving too many fixed reference points to their music rife with compelling evocative intensity. The new ‘anthemic’ single that deals with a toxic relationship is a rousing blend of epic heartfelt feelings, soulful lyricism, and rich yet stripped-down, perfectly orchestrated swirling instrumental interlockings that sway moodily from blurry angsty introspections to majestic chaotic guitar-fueled outbursts of passion, overtaking nervous, emotional baritones with violent spewing mists of hellish love.
- West Berlin-native jazz /baroque pop /northern soul /power pop /sophistipop solo project of musician and composer Patrick Goldstein (aka Caroline Now), aka Goldstonesd – “Trust Me 7” first in a series of three singles over the year (2024)
In his undying search for the perfect song, the longstanding West Berlin-native and The Firestation label-affiliated refined craftsman of precious pop Patrick Goldstein, a.k.a. Goldstoned, concocts, with natural elegance and intriguing harmonic charm, a rich mix of classic 80s/90s British pop, jazz, folk, Bossanova, Northern Soul, and John Barry-esque cinematic music, sprinkled with sun-kissed Beach Boys glints. Making no exception the groovy and nostalgic new single unfurls through jazzy fizzing riffs, swirling Hammond organ washes and Bacharch-like trumpet blasts, to carry heartfelt vocals and a high-energy “good vibrations” chorus, through a restless pleading for trust.
- Detroit, Michigan Indie /Dream Pop duo Bluhm “Under The Glow Of Your Moon” single from the upcoming LP
The second monthly single of “music for lovers and leavers” from the Detroit duo shivers on the glistening rippling of vibrant wistful guitar melodies, layered with a warm humming floor of resonant pulsing bass lines and tinny, steady percussions, swept by emotive keyboard strings, around airy emotional female vocals, haloed in soft baritone echoes, longing and wondering “Will you wait for me?”
