Emerged around late 2023, Shopfires is the home-recorded Indie Pop endeavor from Leicester, UK musician and songwriter Neil Hill, later also paired with his ‘Inchoate Pop’ side project Neuclouds, whose bridge hazy, intricate guitars with poignant lyrics, are drawn from the memories and mis-rememberings of youth, spent and mis-spent.

After four albums in a little more than two years, the double A-side single, “Underachievers / Cuts & Grazes,” via the Manchester/Brighton-based DIY lo-fi label YYZ RECORDS brings SHOPFIRES to vinyl for the first time, in a lathe-cut 7” limited to just 40 copies – surely the perfect match of form and content!

Without ever introducing radical changes in direction, but always able to spot diverse intriguing nuances, whilst seamlessly perfecting his own ideal sonic aesthetic, the British artist never misses a chance to entice the listener with familiar and unfamiliar figments of melodic enchantment.

He wields contemplative, harmonious threads of feathered melancholy with clear-cut precision and a pervasive sense of intimacy.

Every word is filtered through the nostalgic eye of an adult remembering/misremembering hard won triumphs and shattering failures… there’s a juxtaposition between the melancholic lyrics and the shiny jangling guitars. A shimmer of hope in every song. Perhaps.Speaking about his approach, Neil says

The first excerpt, “Underachievers”, is a soul-stirring song about being put down, possibly degraded, for wanting to have a simple life, by the light of taking the accuser down by loving them.

Lively, steady rhythms pulse hypnotically along with shimmering, jangly circular guitar patterns, colored with languorous trumpet embellishments, delicate tinkly keyboard keys, and smooth, sad flute-like melodies, all wobbling around downhearted male vocals calmly, but with a serious edge, venting about a person who insults under their breath.

In the nostalgia-filled visuals for “Underachievers”, vintage clips show the many different ways competition was promoted in the late-1960s/70s. Mixed within the high-stress actions and events, musical imagery takes hold alongside the low horizon sunlight of amber skies.

Shopfires‘ lathe-cut 7” single, “Underachievers / Cuts & Grazes,” will be out on 9th OCTOBER 2026. On PRE-ORDER from the 25th SEPTEMBER via YYZ RECORDS (YYZ3).
