WL//WH Track Of The Day : MELLOW LIZARD “Strangest Places”

Track Of The Day

The home studio recordings, started in the early 2015, from Heraklion based prolific Greek musician and composer Thodoris Tabakakis, show up on regular weekly basis on demo version first on Soundcloud then increasingly on YouTube, and only later on will be collected in digital format into an EP or LP on Bandcamp.

The clear influences from the rock epic of the 60s and 70s, with the addiction of shoegaze, krautrock and Anton Newcombe’s Brian Jonestown Massacre suggestions, are wonderfully metabolized to create a lo-fi, decidedly contemporary and fascinatingly retro, psychedelic sound, well blended in its different components but above all very personal and organic, resulting in hypnotic, persuasive, immersive songs.

The ‘Syd Barrett’ flavoured “Strangest Places” mingles repetive gentle drums with slowly strummed acoustic and swirling, lysergic guitar melodies snaking around over dazed soft voice to create woozy, unease and desolate sense of loneliness and emptiness lingering underneath that burrows into the listener’s mind.

Empty, melting, strange faces in a hazy crowd of lysergia lead to a journey of strange places until finding his dream girl in this sweet love song.

Beautiful glimpses of DIY song craftsmanship, highly recommended.
