Arash & Quasar is the moniker of Pavel Grachev and Vitaly Zhulkov, an electronic music duo from Russia, two friends, DJs, collectors of rare vinyl records, musicians and painters. The pair unfurls a 2-hour long, thoughtful and startling trip through slow-mo psychedelic electronic realms, flecked with Middle-Eastern flavours, awash in profound kaleidoscopic visions and abstract metaphysical perceptions, both visually stimulating and sensually immersive.

Taken from a huge Carte Blanche label 50-track collection of the international electronic underground, Russian rave electro-breaks conspirator, as usual, starts right off the bat filled with raw, simmering and propulsive electro energy centered on pounding broken rhythmic patterns and menacing, distorted bass throbbings, peppered with submerged vocal clips raging “since the beginning of fucking time!.”

Melbourne-bred producer with a highly sensitive and imaginative exploration of both scratchy yet immersive and seamlessly emotive Deep House meets Dub Techno edges. “It Has To Be” stirs up a beautifully watery, deep atmospheric unfurling of crisp, groovy percussive loops, warm low-end pulses, glitchy ruffles, and emotive swelling synth pads, into an expansive enveloping sea that rubs and stimulates the senses.

It’s always enjoyable to recollect echoes of a remote past that keeps exploring off-kilter but damnably groovy and soulful genre-bending territories that seem never-ending. Born in the late ’90s around the Jazzanova collective, I recall smoky nights in a rather labyrinthine club—I don’t remember the name now—in Berlin‘s Mitte, not yet, but soon to become a totally touristy and gentrified area, the Sonar Kollektiv label continues to be as vibrant as ever, blurring the organic and the synthetic, through warm and mellow slowed-down, trip-hop-inspired, downtempo pulses and elegiac and plaintive sax melodies winding towards a boundless enveloping sea of poignant melancholy. Enchanting.
