PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Canadian-based alternative rock /shoegaze /trip-hop /dream pop duo Palm Haze “Cassie Underground” single
The Canadian eclectic atmospheric shoegazing duo is constantly able to shuffle their nuanced sound palette deftly finding an unpredictable and intriguing songwriting style. The new single pulses on crisp repetitive rhythms to drive emotive floating guitar sways, casting introspective dim, wistful impressions while alternating with edgy fuzz-laden riffs and forlorn distorted licks, to surround breathy, slightly elated, vocals, with waves of nostalgic longing for lost intimacy
- Queens, New York indie /shoegaze /dream pop four-piece Iceblynk “Plummet” 2-track single
New York shoegazers’ new single ponders how we accept the worldview given to us without hesitation or thought, while triggering urgent stumbling drums to drive through a rippling agonizing vortex of ringing guitar distortion, hanging over fragile heartfelt vocals struggling to radiate through the disorienting haze.
- Grenoble, France ambient /indie rock /slowcore band Proto “Peur bleue” from upcoming cassette album “Maintenance” [Hidden Bay Records]
Southeastern France newcomer blends taut, emotive 90s guitar leanings with introspective slowcore ambience. The first glimpse from the debut LP races all the way through on motorik beats alongside punchy elastic basslines, slowed down by scattered interludes of sizzling, sharp-edged ringing guitar slivers and restrained, droning distortions, while aloof yet restless spoken words release imagined fear amid the anxiety of being left alone.
