PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Liverpool, UK reverb-laced indie pop band led by singer-songwriter Mike Simms, aka Bright Islands “Tomorrow” off 2-track EP

Second EP for Scouse singer-songwriter Mike Simms with his organic and heartful jangle guitar pop infused with profound intensity and an uncommon sense of bittersweet intimate melodicism. “You don’t get over a broken heart, you just learn to carry it gracefully” whispered Jens Lekman some years ago in tones certainly more lively than the achingly reflective lyricism of the Brit, that tugs deeply on our heartstrings with resonant melancholic introspection carved by relentless sparkly piercing guitar pain, punctuated by a repetitive unremitting carpet of tapping percussions and pinpoint basslines, to counterpoint and echo earnest vocal heartache and minimal female halos, whilst slowly enveloping sad violin strings weeping a final farewell to love.

  • Athens, Greece indie rock /shoegaze /dream pop DIY project Get Violet “June solstice” single

A captivating third single from an enigmatic and intriguing bedroom pop unit from the Greek capital, possibly their best effort so far, stirs an immersive rush of twinkling arpeggiated guitar and humming bass lines, to rapidly sway with urgent longing around heartfelt vocals, switching breathy introspection with rising passion, into a racing whirl of romantic obsession.

  • Sydney‘s power-prog-pop quartet (former members of Day Ravies), Sachet “Crushing Whims (Ride)” from the upcoming cassette EP “The Seeing Machine” on Tenth Court

Born from the demise of quite brilliant shoegazers Day Ravies, Melbourne‘s 4-piece return with a heady slice of Power-Pop sprinkled with perky 80s-tinged New Wave, to toss wind-blown, nostalgic and sassy moods injected by wandering spirals of vibrant obsessive guitar melodies along with throbbing and chugging bass lines, coiling around high-energy flirtatious vocals, with an exuberant passion for a nightly bike ride.
