Buenos Aires‘ quintet weaves hypnotic sparkling layers of dream pop that cascades through a whimsical floating tangle of crystalline guitar melodies floating over a bouncy bed of sprightly drum beats and bubbling basslines, to carry the high-pitched fear and longing of lost angsty vocal cries swathed in introspective melancholy.

Bay Area‘s collective returns with a new 7inch single typical of the band’s languid and downcast balladry, suffused with bittersweet nostalgia and choked desolation, subtly imbued with Velvets’ narcotic drone and Galaxie 500’s apathetic melancholy, to wind lost wandering strums around soft, muffled heartbroken breathes, whilst low throbbing bass lines and muted sparse lilting percussive knocks pull emotional lyrical tragedy through dawning chimes of sparse twinkling hope.

Although personally more tied, due to merely sentimental reasons, at the dawn of the Creation label established around the sampler “Alive In The Living Room” in 1984, no less trailblazing was the period from the late 80s until the mid-90s, it could not be otherwise with timeless records such as ” Screamadelica”, “Loveless”, “Psychocandy”, “Just For A Day” and “Bandwagonesque”; and precisely that the Alan McGee‘s spirit of “we only ever truly cared about the music”, that the Brighton based DIY label Crafting Room Recordings tries to capture and revitalize 23 years after its disbandment, through a careful selection of covers from venerated classics from the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Teenage Fanclub, House of Love and many more. An eclectic 60s-driven rollercoaster ride of great music, mostly out of the ordinary, which has marked the life of more than a generation, as it was for me, together with the Factory, 4AD, and Postcard. I’d like to briefly point out the nostalgic jingle-jangle delight of the remodeled version of an overlooked Biff Bang Pow‘s little gem by beloved Swedish guitar poppers Stephen’s Shore, and the imaginative reshaping of The House of Love‘s haunting hit “Christine” into a mesmerizing synth-washed dream-pop reverie by Jack Jazrawy-Brown aka Sunspire. A vinyl compilation that combines heartfelt passion and a good charity cause, a perfect Christmas gift.
