Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – December #49-21
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Wellington, New Zealand trip-hop /breakbeat /post-gaze /electronic solo project of musician and composer Matt Dalzell, aka METROSIDEROS “If This Be Love ft. POPORAZZI” (Single)
Sophisticated and refined music from the former guitarist of late 80s/90s Auckland’s shoegaze band The Malchicks, in his peregrinations around atmospheric trip-pop, covered by a gauzy mist of reverb, suspended between past and present, which besides the 90s inflexions, could be comfortably hosted, at the beginning of ‘2000, by labels such as Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv, their brilliant “Secret Love” compilation series, Compost, Thou Thoughts etc. Folktronica tinged new single, featuring the pristine captivating voice of Poporazzi, slowly lilts through dinging repetitive organic acoustic guitar plucks to stir mesmeric shuffled syncopated beats and smooth bongo percussive flairs lingering across intoxicating nostalgic horizons, haunted by swelling glaring suspenseful strings, to slip into a calm and groovy force of perpetual insight underneath dreamy, heartfelt vocal harmonies releasing doubt and fear into an intoxicating universe of uncertain fate.
- Buenos Aires-based kraut /psych /dream pop shoegaze project of musician-artist Ferran Pont Vergés, aka Die Noia Futuriszka “Distant Room” (Single)
As always something noteworthy escapes our fleeting radar systems on every Bandcamp Friday, but we’re ready to catch up … Ferran Pont, (AKA DNF) blends sad post-punk melodic bass shadows with shimmering abrasive and pungent shivering shoegaze guitars and fuzzy ghostly lysergic wafts to squire long lost dreams from the disorienting warped moods of haunted nervous vocal evocations, shedding alternate dimensional light onto the future insight of a “Distant Room.”
- Italian four-piece indie rock band from Turin, SMILE “Half Faith, Half Struggle” single
It applies here as above for the Turin-based 4-piece, back with a one-off, tense, sharp, almost cathartic year-end single, played with urgency and anger, almost like throwing away all its pent-up waste, in which the familiar touches of REM-like jangly gray melancholy are overwhelmed by noisy and emphatic doses of louder and emotional-ridden rockier hints to Minneapolis’ finest The Replacements and Hüsker Dü, through resonant bursts of abrasive fuzzy guitar mists, throbbing frenetically along with a snaky deep bassline and rapid rolling drum rhythms, to vault high strung vocal harmonies, filled with “Half Faith, Half Struggle,” into the chaotic gloom of modern-day madness.
- South East London, UK indie jangle-pop DIY foursome The Hannah Barberas “Oh Santa Claus! (Faster Claus version)” from “Winter” EP (version included on the compilation “A Very Cherry Christmas vol.15”, released November 2021 via Doo Lang Records)
