PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Copenhagen, Denmark noise-pop /shoegaze /indie rock duo of Casper Iskov and Mathias Risager, aka Ethics “Portraying You As A Goat (feat. Lilipine)”, 2nd single from the upcoming album.

The Danish noise-pop duo made of multi-instrumentalist Casper Iskov, precious low-key collaborator of Thierry Haliniak ( My Raining Stars, Meyverlin), and drummer Mathias Risager, featuring Polish guest vocalist Lilipine, (Fudge, Drop Nineteens), drops an early-90s shoegaze infused new single, oscillating  seamlessly between reflective, soft, to jagged, and noisy dynamics through steady off-tempo drum beats that prod the rattles of murky, gritty bass throbs and distorted grungy riffs, alternating with mood-building light bouncy strums to coalesce into a swaying wistful wave of insistent ringing and abrasive reverberations around angsty conflicted male/female dreamy layered vocal, stuck, far from reality, in double talk.

  • Brisbane, Australia post-punk /shoegaze /indie rock duo Western Freeway “Swerve” title track of the new EP “Swerve”

The Brisbane-based experienced shoegazey Indie rock duo has kept quite a prolific release schedule in the last couple of years, with its organic highs and lows. In the latest EP “Swerve”, amid a couple of electric and acoustic (“Neil Young”) emotional ballads, is the 90s Guided by Voices-tinged title track that stands out, propelled by a relentless skittering drumming shuffles with thick and bendy distorted, at times wailing, guitar riffs, to wave a building fuzzy haze of lingering tension around long drawn out, regretful vocals fretting about broken promises and unpaid debt in an inner loop where there is too much noise.

  • Manchester, UK grunge /fuzzy noise-rock /punk trio THE EMPTY PAGE “When We Gonna Run?” single

One of the most electrifying and rousing songs of the week, rife with unrestrained punky energy, Mancunian grit and blistering hooks. In preparation for leaving a pre-apocalyptic hellscape (aka 2025), where all sense of belonging has fallen away, “When We Gonna Run?” compels an adrenaline rush of walloping drums, thrumming bass lines, along with jagged, ringing guitars, to relentlessly pierce frightened, emotional female vocals, swaying dramatically from raw pain-filled angst to helpless gloom, whilst clinging on to an idealized notion of love.
