PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Sydney, Australia dream-pop duo Lorelei “88” from the double A-side single “Dark Arches & 88”
New double single after more than two years of hiatus from the Dream Pop duo from Melbourne. “88” lays out the pair’s distinctive lush interplay of shadow and light through spirals of beautifully tragic atmospheric vocals, gliding over a vibrant backdrop of crisp juddering percussion patterns, ghostly synth, and sharp, glowing guitar reverberations with fragile breathy harmonies, haunted by obsessive ringing echoes and agonizing searing bursts, to explore loss and darkness.
- Brisbane, Australia alt-rock /shoegaze band Blue Diner. “Silhouettes” single
Third enveloping and surreal single, about pushing through difficult times, from the quiet + loud, not much loud to be fair this time, four-piece from Brisbane. ”Silhouettes” instead ebbs and flows, in a pleasant balance amid bedroom-pop reflective intimacy and a 90s shoegaze haze, stirred by stumbling drums and snaky warm bass pulses through blankets of shimmering wistful guitar melodies and soft buzzing, distorted riffs, echoing and swelling over angst dreamy vocals and soft aching back-ups, struggling to let go into a turbulent euphoric finale.
- Melbourne 4-piece indie rock /grunge /folk rock band fronted by singer-songwriter and guitarist, Milly Haig, aka Milly Strange “Watching, Waiting” second single
The third suggestion again from Down Under comes from a newcomer band fronted by singer-songwriter Milly Haig, which delivers haunted, moody folk storytelling possessed by biting and vibrant grunge and rock and roll demons, braced by a magnetic expressive, vocal delivery, that can take on high and deep, as well as poignant and powerful tones in Polly Jean Harvey’s style. “Watching, Waiting” drives punchy syncopated drum beats and erratic bass lines to underpin deeply felt, resolved vocals, with veneers of anger and pain, belting out emotional harmonies, echoed by turbulent quivers of energetic sparkling guitar riffs laced with soaring, pain-filled shrieky and wailing leads, to explore the point in a relationship when a person stops caring and is just glad it’s over.
We are proud to announce our partnership with eardrumbuzzradio and Shore Dive Records in sponsoring #gimfest2 in Boom Leeds on 7th December. Get your tickets at this link.
