Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – NOVEMBER #46-23

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Boston, MA dream pop /shoegaze /psychedelic band led by Reuben Bettsak, aka Emerald Comets “Silhouette” (single)

Another single immersed in blurry, lush and whimsical psychedelic sheens, a mind-altering excursion ala mid-90s The Brian Jonestown Massacre, swept by crunchy distorted guitars twirling and echoing in abrasive guitar riffs and excruciating high-pitched towering leads, interlaced with rambling wistful piano melodies and loose stumbling drums, unsteadily surrounding high angst whispery vocals and lingering ecstatic back-ups, in dangerous sways of a tempted fate.

  • Seattle, WA psychedelic post-shoegaze rock band Guest Directors “Our Last Christmas Time” from the “black solstice” Christmas” single “Our Last Christmas Time/Laser Hands (Turner’s Version)”

Even if in truth I don’t have a great passion for Christmas singles, or better for all the consumerist holidays in general, less than two months after their well-received album, “Interference Patterns”, the Seattle band has shared an equally melancholic and liberating “black solstice ballad for the holidays”. Shrouded in a droning distorted lysergic haze, slowly plodding on thudding percussions, weaved by subtle twinkling guitar phrasing, wah-wah charged twisted swells and high bleeding flourishes around aching, heartfelt vocals, recalling “Our Last Christmas Together” beneath intense nostalgic feelings of sadness and bliss.

  • Singapore sadcore /grungegaze /shoegaze band, feelslikeyou “Haze” from “Haze / Summer” debut single

Debut two-tracker from a new Shoegaze band from Singapore caresses and scratches our senses with a dense electrifying misty vortex of delay, reverb, and fuzz, carved by loud squealing and ringing guitar flows, charged by heavy stumbling drum beats, to obsessively somberly vibrate and submerge lost and lonely vocals in an overwhelming “Haze” of numb pain. Chilly, moody, & mesmerizing, a terrific start.
