PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Leicester, UK 80s indie pop collaboration SHOPFIRES/NEUCLOUDS “This Is Not What We Were Hoping For” single
English homespun musician Neil Hill deftly combines his main stripped-down jangle pop facet, SHOPFIRES, with his pure pop side alter ego, NEUCLOUDS, to serve up an “80s style Indie Pop anthem”. An endearing and soul-stirring airy melancholy slides gracefully over the nostalgic guitar chords of rippling, shimmering riffs, stirred with a subtly distorted, emotional swelling solo, while soft, wistful, remorseful vocals accept that “This is not what we were hoping for”, then soar into a cathartic chorus to let go of pain and start again, leaving the listener with a pleasant lingering feeling of pop satisfaction.
- London, UK doompop /shoegaze /dream pop trio Rain Cloud Nine “right as rain” single
London-based outfit returns, expanded as a trio, with a new single combining layered noisy shoegaze atmospherics with heartfelt melancholic introspective harmonies to deliver deceptively nice insight into the strain of ‘wearing a mask’. A vibrant, meandering of insistent, shimmery guitar riffs, sweetly ring around emotional, loose female vocals, wrapped by immersive swells of wistful, airy effect-laden mists, radiating calm, dreamy elation amid reflective baritone backups.
- Chicago, IL Blackened Alt-Emo /Shoegaze trio Griefeater “Evelyn” from the upcoming debut LP “Worn”
Chicago shoegazers draw up slowcore and screamo leanings in their one and only single, “Evelyn”, to anticipate the soon-to-be-dropped debut LP. Featherlight, gloomy vocals glide on the slowly building quiet tension and lingering pained emotional depth from lithe and repetitive, subtly scraping, shimmery guitar patterns, stirred by busy, loose drums, to go back and forth with doomy, distorted minor-key riffs and piercing, weeping slivers, conveying, with rage-filled back-up screams and echoes, deep seeded feelings of sadness, frustration, and alienation.
- Liverpool, UK psychedelic folk rock singer-songwriter Jane Weaver, aka Jane Weaver Septiéme Sœur “Jane Weaver Septiéme Sœur with Demdike Stare – Europium Alluminate” from the expanded reissue + remixes of the 2010 fourth album “The Fallen By Watchbird (Expanded Edition)” [Fire Records]
