PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Trondheim, Norway DIY shoegaze /dreamrock quartet Slow Country “Ixus 70” second single
The sophomore single from the DIY Trondheim dreamrockers builds a heavy and mesmeric textural swathing density, stirred by shuffling drums, that echo and tremble seamlessly, carved out by recurring bittersweet twinkling guitar ripples and resonant soars of abrasive scratchy distortion, engulfing lost, ghost-like vocals in a timeless and abysmal darkness of blindness and longing.
- Massachusetts neo-psychedelic /dream pop /indie rock duo Spare Heart “Souls Of Gold” single
Late 80s jangly and slightly 60s surf infused, buzzing guitar pop tune, about how the mind plays tricks by making the past seem more rosy than it was, triggering steady punchy drum beats and humming supple bass pulses to liven up a build of balanced and upbeat grooves woven with washes of dire emotional ringing guitars spiraling with reverberating fuzzy melancholy around breathy, vibrant female vocals rising, slightly anxious yet hope-filled, through a slew of lively sparkling and grounding melodies.
- Brazilian dream-pop /shoegaze father and daughter duo Lwna “Missing You All” single
Suddenly popped up from the dark with two interesting albums almost simultaneously, blurring the orthodox, both noisy and melodic, strains of 90s Shoegaze and Dream Pop with an earnest and delicate emotive heft. The absence of social media, once not too essential for us, made us wonder whether it was AI-generated music, but after a positive confirmation from a trusted Brazilian source, here we go with the brand new single. A cold, grey melancholic ode to the loss of beloved pets, seized by drowsy, depressed vocals that softly billow upon a stumbling, reflective vast sheet inlayed by dull, wistful guitar chords, fuzz-laced bursts and plaintive, searing leads, to hang down and finally soar into warm, pain-filled longing whilst remembering the faces and spaces of lost beloved animals.
