PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Tampere, Finland dream pop /shoegaze 4-piece Mumrunner “Cat State” first single from the forthcoming second album via Automatic Music
After a long hibernation since their brilliant 2020 debut album “Valeriana”, our old Finnish acquaintances Mumrunner, refined crafters of shaded dreamlike reverb-soaked incantations, are back on track with the first intoxicating foretaste from the next year’s second LP. A taut shuffling drumming resounds against warm pulsing basslines, and echoing layers of crystalline guitar melodies, that float fluidly alongside dual male/female vocals of angsty longing and featherlight baritone comfort, soaring with stretched, swirling intensity, to descend, whilst pondering the time state of human feelings through an experimental lens of Schrödinger’s Cat.
- UK acid house /experimental /space disco /synth-pop band Party Pencil “Bed of Memories” title track of the debut EP “Bed of Memories”
“Bed of Memories” is seemingly the debut 4-track EP from an enigmatic UK outfit that fully succeeds in its intent to provide synth music laced with ‘Warm, Melodic, Fun’. The captivating synth-pop title track about growing up, reminiscent of OMD’s glowing synth crispiness, pulls playful vibrant bright synth melodies swirling atop the constant bounce of peppy, clapping drum patterns, humming bass pulses, and cheery yet angsty, breathy vocals, to conjure bittersweet feelings of joy and melancholy. For the more adventurous listeners, the 4-tracker’s core is filled with oddball and mercurial electronica, varying from the upbeat and playful bleepy “Crayon Town”, to the anxiously tinkling doomy “Atomic Island”.
- London-based dreampop / gothgaze Cloud Studies “Ghosts” debut single via Happy Robots Records
Brand new English trio finely purveyors of gothy shoegazey, dream pop visions with a debut single soaked in a flowing, shimmery haunting ambience, anchored by a sinuous humming bassline that nervously pulses along steady hypnotic drum beats, under coiling twinkling rains of piercing guitar glimmers, to hopelessly shiver over gentle aching vocals, releasing heartache amid restless spectres of tension.
