PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • NorwegianGerman sophisti-pop /indie pop duo J.O. Åleskjær and Seb Voss, aka Herr Wade “Haus mit Aussicht” from the upcoming mini-LP “The Opposite Of Cool” [Bureau Platiruma]

Norwegian/German uncool pop extraordinaries, now also a live four-piece band ready to take  all the venues near you by storm, unveil the upcoming new mini-album with the first tease, “House With A view”. Another fine crafted pop song once again felt like a soundtrack to an imaginary John Barry’s Bond score, urgently racing through high tempo drums, bouncy guitar riffs with secretive twangy “spy” tones and piercing leads, swathed by shivering and swirling cinematic strings atop vibrant male vocals layering with shadowy haloes and boisterous backups, laced with “adolescence, doom scenario school literature, Hasenbrot, Clearasil and The Boy with a thorn is his side”.

  • Tokyo, Japan alternative rock /emo /gazecore /shoegaze /art rock band The Florist “Sundown” single

Some years back one of the most promising bands from the Japanese alternative rock/shoegaze scene, with three well-received albums, spanning from 2014 to 2021, under their belts before going on hiatus, until now. The new single drives steady stumbling drum beats that ceaselessly brace dense swirling hazy waves of heavily distorted, fuzzy riffs, amid sudden jagged bursts of edgy energy and shimmery reflective respites, battering softly anxious, gloomy male vocals, releasing loneliness beneath a fleeting afterglow, before finally crushing with a sweeping blaring chaos.
A return without too many surprises, but which renews the group’s classic 90s shoegaze sound, at times peppered with Emo tones, and more recent DIIV nuances, equally powerful and saturated, as it is introspective and emotionally resonant.

  • Swedish new guitar pop solo endeavour by The Electric Pop Group vocalist and guitarist Erik Aamot, aka Norwegian Blue – “Something New” debut single from a forthcoming LP  [Matinée Recordings]

First release from the new effort by Erik Aamot, one of the founding brothers of the renowned Gothenburg group The Electric Pop Group. Stuck in between a droning pinch of the Velvets, and a sparkly dash of Brighter, “Something New” is a heart-melting concoction of steady tinny drum patterns, serpentine humming bass lines, tight hypnotic sharply ringing riffs laced with acoustic strums and glowing synths, to warmly cocoon the endless stirring grace of heartfelt male vocals, crooning, with uplifting ‘pa pa pa’ back-ups, about trying to do good things in life. As usual, wonderfully timeless emotive indie pop from the Matinée label stable.
