WL//WH Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips #40
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Denton, TX shoegaze/dreampop/noise-pop band FLOWERBED “Everything” new single
“Everything” thrives of sharp contrasts, intense facets, and enticing melodies, amidst a heavy reverb-drenched layer of fizzling abrasion and sparkling hypnotic guitar strings that buzz and stir to enhanced clear, ethereal, atmospheric vocal harmonies that slowly soar into a nuanced hazy bliss.
- Wellington, New Zealand “trip-hop post-gaze” duo of Matt Dalzell (formerly songwriter and guitarist for NZ shoegaze pioneers The Malchicks), and young chanteuse Ellie Rose, aka Metrosideros “You Don’t Need To Carry That Load” debut single
Hypnotic resonant syncopated beats embrace the smokey haze with introspective and soothing intensity, plodding along with groovy sliding guitar riffs, emphasized by beautifully haunted soulful female vocals digging deep into a tumultuous array of emotions and the steady grind of life’s painfully heavy burdens, to form a poignant and melodious catharsis for the soul. Released almost on the sly at the end of August, I quickly listened to it but somehow slipped out of my hands, Wellington duet is a striking promising mix of experience and youthfulness.
- Southend On Sea, UK based lo-fi/shoegaze/fuzz loving-grungers HIGH/LOW “Hole In My Skin” from the new EP “Milk Moustache” (EP 4 in a monthly series of 6)
Prolific lo-fi Bedroom Fuzzed-Out Grungers are one of those bands with a well-defined sound, in this case, the American guitar noise rock of the 90s with the addition of a pinch of power pop, which despite the seemingly exterior uniformity, have the uncommon knack for grabbing your attention from the first to the last song without losing tension and catchy appeal. Just listen to believe the latest EP with the guitar that distils blankets of equally strident and pristine noise of melodic swirling sinuosity with an irresistible pop-grunge roughness, backed a constantly pulsating groovy rhythm section, and buoyant, soul-bearing vocal harmonies, to keep you irresistibly hooked.
