Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – SEPTEMBER 2024 – #39-24

Summer is definitely over, and the weather sucks, so grab a cup of tea and tune in, this week we’ll be playing songs from the label Shore Dive Records, stuff we like and stuff from our partner WhiteLight/WhiteHeat https://www.whitelight-whiteheat.com/

As a reminder, don’t forget the Shore Dive Records‘ compilation “Music For Tami”, to raise funds for the critical surgery of the Lamoreaux family. Musician and Somewherecold Records owner, Jason has been a longstanding huge part of our music community. All the proceeds of the album will be donated to help out.

Tune in:
First Saturday of the month at noon, 4pm and 8pm PST on EDBZ.
Every other Monday at 8pm UK time on Slack City.
Every Wednesday at 9pm UK time on Smile Radio

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • UK lo-fi experimental /dream pop /shoegaze solo project Geneva Drive “Mirroring” single

Possibly the most rhythmic and enlivened track so far by the homespun, atmospheric and immersive shoegaze solo project. The looping hypnotic pace of flat knocking drum beats interlocks with supple bassline grooves, to carry floating blissful vocals, in awe of the starry night, through a mirroring of blazing, reeling guitar flourishes, slowly soaring upward toward heaven.

  • France-based dream pop /shoegaze collaborative music project started by British musician Andrew Rose in 1984, Callière “Silver (single edit mix)” the full-length mix will be on the forthcoming album “Float”

I have never been too fond of CDs, finding them, unlike the bulkier vinyl, plasticized and impersonal, as well as expensive, at least in the 90s, even if, by avoiding them mostly, I did not disdain the cardboard sleeve limited editions and box sets. It’s a hymn to the CD instead, the immersive and stirring new single from Callière to celebrate his first two purchases, David Sylvian and Cocteau Twins, regarding the former by the way, clearly comes to my mind the annoying rustling vinyl of “Brilliant Trees”, later replaced by the refined CD box set, definitely box-shaped, I cannot help but agree with his rejoicing. Nodding sonically to his treasured signed Slowdive CD, heady elated atmospherics tremble, immersed in gentle swirling layers of tinkling guitar reflections, and slow reverb-drenched swollen-guitar mists while soft nostalgic vocals lift the soul in unison with a dazzling sky-gazing experience.

  • Tokyo/San Francisco ambient psychedelic collaboration between Japanese ’90s indie pop sextet led by Masato Saito (Pervenche), and Bay Area musician and composer Michael Ramos (Cindy, Flowertown, April Magazines), The Moment of Nightfall and Tony Jay “kori no mori (Ice Forest)” from upcoming cassette/10″ EP “Winter Dream” via KiliKiliVilla

Even though I don’t spend much time on social media, especially on IG, after a while I get a sense of suffocation, I followed with keen interest the rather detailed adventures of the recent tour of our Tony Jay to the East. And as often happens, it’s born, through the naturalness of chance, a collaboration with the local indie stalwarts The Moment of Nightfall, to explore wintry ambient psychedelia influenced by a lot of our favourite bands VU first and foremost. From the first two previews expect hypnotic and minimal layers of rippling reflective sparkling guitars, warm bass pulses and soft lilting percussions, in “Tell Me Why” appears also a vaguely lysergic droning organ, as an eerie reverberant backdrop to soft, dreamy, wistful, layered vocals in a sadly ecstatic and transcendent endless ghostly floating.
