Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – SEPTEMBER #38-23
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Jatinangor, Indonesia shoegaze /C86 /noise-pop moniker of Faizal Agusdin from indie-pop outfit Well Whale, Wild Grass Picture – “My Dear” single on Chaotic Pop Records
- Jakarta, Indonesia shoegaze /noise pop trio VANISHING MUFFINS “To be with someone that shouldn’t be with me” from the 2-track cassette single “Taste Of Cherry” via disanorak
For some years now a consistent purveyor of electrifying Jangle Indie Pop in full DIY ethic, the Indonesian label Heaven Punks/Disanorak, has been joined recently by the new equally exciting fellow Chaotic Pop Records imprint, further connected this week by two distinctive releases packed with a compelling retro Noise-Pop sound of fuzzy hooky charms and raw bracing energy you can’t help but be wonderfully dazed. Tight clattering rhythms, faint bristling melodies and simple yet abrasive guitar chords, doused in a seductive thick and buzzy blanket of feedback and distortions, amidst intense lo-fi legacy and edgy punk vibrancy clearly nodding to The Jesus and Mary Chain, Shop Assistants, The Motorcycle Boy, The Ramones, The Velvet Underground and MBV wall of sound racket.
While the sizzling punkish “My Dear” by Wild Grass Picture, a sort of tragic poem of love and hate, framed by a tasty J.P.Leaud/Truffaut-esque cover, had already appeared in a split EP around 3 years ago that went mostly unnoticed with the equally highly interesting combo Lawrence & Kim, as regards “Taste Of Cherry” from my ‘old acquaintances’ Vanishing Muffins I had talked about it extensively here last February, unreleased is instead the Velvetian, with somehow a subtle Primal Scream’s screamadelic soul, “To be with someone that shouldn’t be with me”. In short, a heap of good old noise and nostalgic melodies to pleasantly saturate our ears.
- Austin, TX-based shoegaze /dream pop duo, Wybercron “Imprint” single
The new single from the Austin-based duo draws an impeccable atmospheric floating made of enveloping soft and dreamy visions infused with expanding droning icy bright melancholy, punctuated by crisp stacking beats, hearty bass pulses, echoing emotive guitar glistens, to cocoon detached airy vocals, with comforting protection from helplessness and despair.
- Portland, Maine-based psych /dream pop /shoegaze 4-piece band Crystal Canyon “Catatonia” from the upcoming third album “Stars and Distant Light”
Usual intoxicating dose of rarefied melodic bliss from the Maine’s quartet, a cool nostalgic vibrant gust of invigorating shivering fuzz-out guitar washes, ringing swells, warm groovy bassline palpitations, steady skipping drums, and soft layered heartfelt vocals, arouse sinuously bewitching feelings of longing and hope from a distant horizon of dreamy sparkling skies.
