Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – Sept. #37-21

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Italian Jangle /Indie Pop solo project of multi-instrumentalist-singer and songwriter Andrea Calvo, GRAND DRIFTER “Haunted Life” debut single from the upcoming album “Only Child”[Subjangle / Sciopero Records]

Written enveloped in lost nostalgic moods inspired by the beloved music of Sarah Records, Go-Betweens, or possibly George Harrison, the first single from Italian singer/songwriter, with the help of a bunch of friends (his full YoYo Mundi band and a couple of Smiles members), unfurls swaying energetic acoustic strums that trigger steady drum beats and a sinuous pulsing bassline, punctuated by a moving string of poignant piano keys, smearing with subtly groovy echoes of early Dream Syndicate’s droning fuzzy guitar riffs and piercing distorted licks, heightened in the casual Dylanesque warmth of harmonica swells, to build a shiny depth-defying expanse of wistful ripples around the magnetic vocal interplay of emotional male vocals and light whimsical back-ups, to draw dramatic passion and angst from a “Haunted Life.”
Piedmont bred musician stirs a glowing atmosphere of autumnal melancholy encompassed with heartfelt sentiments, that gently waft over you through the golden leaves and, as so it often happens with the most understated and sheer pop, slowly burrows deep into the heart.

  • Swedish bedroom /jangle /psych /dream pop project of Fredrik Bergstrand (formerly Valskrik), Scuba Dvala “Anxious Eyes” new single

Swedish sophisticated songwriter is back, after almost a year, with a fanciful and bewitching new single, poised between soothing dreamy pop and delicate psychedelia, lush and soft like the first spring sun, yet at the same time tinged with subtle introspective turmoil, lead by a smooth, sinuously groovy rhythm section, drowned in ethereal plaintive luscious synths combined with glistening jangly guitar melodies, to build a velvety and enveloping surface, perturbed by sparse nervous lashing hits, on which contemplative vocals and woozy whispers sway along with whimsical keyboards into dazy and obsessive realms of angst, deception and murderous “Anxious Eyes.”

  • Clare, Australia jangle /dream-pop /guitar pop project ENGLISH SUMMER “Tall Story” (Single)

Hanging in between shelved albums, song sketches and a remarkable songwriting talent yet to fulfil, the artist from Clare, Australia returns with 2 brand new songs almost at the same time, from which, as according to the musician himself, the most refined is the as exuberant and sparkly, as it is brittle and edgy, “Tall Story”, cloaked in an ambience of momentous personal conviction, joining the dots between early 80s Postcard Records and mid 80s Creation Records, equally brilliantly ramshackle yet irresistibly urgent guitar pop.  It unleashes crisp spritely shiny guitar riffs that carve wistful melodies of bursting raw vibrancy over sinuous bass pulses, and rickety, scattered drum beats, whilst dramatic male vocals release regretful confessions of disenchanted love into the stormy suggestions of deceit.
