PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Toulouse-based lo-fi dream pop /emo /sadcore home recorded solo project of Manon Raupp (part of Docks, No Drama, Vemberlain), Comité balnéaire “6h26” from upcoming cassette EP “Augures” [Hidden Bay Records]

Blending Slowcore’s dilated, emotionally drenched intensity and Emo’s openhearted catharsis, “6h26” talks about taking a solitary walk during the final hour of night to learn and process the latent emotions residing beneath the surface. Punctuated by a sparse, repetitive, stark drum machine, the sonorous, crisp pulses from a bleak bassline intertwine with spiraling clear-cut forlorn guitar arpeggios, subtly swept by icy synth breaths that slowly and obsessively evolve into a tighter and tenser sound density to sustain melancholic, bitter, echo-like vocals, fading, like a ghost, into a cathartic finale of triumphant screams.

  • Atlanta, Georgia ambient /folk /shoegaze /slowcore project by Brent Collins, No Wake Area “Soon” debut single

Intimate and atmospheric folk-gaze debut single from the low-key side project of the Atlanta based DIY musician and composer Brent Collins (a.k.a. Slo Moon), which slinkily winds through rubbery bass pulses and soft, steady percussion into a reflective blanket of liquid, shimmering filigrees of wistful reverberated guitars, cocooning sad, emotional vocals that rise toward a high hopeful pitch, to explore being lost and full of confused regret, yet faithful that support and direction will arrive.

  • Brighton, UK jangly gaze noise-pop duo Jane and Andrew Craig, aka dreamcoaster “Just Turn Around” single

One-off single, “firmly in the duo’s sweet spot between jangle pop and dreampop”, that says when things get too far off the ground, one should turn around, self-reflect, and then try again. It takes us into a warm, melancholic pulsing vortex sewn by slightly distorted, shuddering guitar textures, swooning keyboards and soaring sparkling six-string melodies, to envelop dulcet, heartfelt female vocals, soothing with breezy, ethereal layers, blissed out with comfort and understanding.
