Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – AUGUST #34-23

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • San Antonio, TX noise-pop /dream pop /shoegaze 5-piece FAWN “Regress” from Fawn / Cement Diver split cassette EP on suburban creep records

The two Texan shoegaze outfits from San Antonio deploy a split EP replete with both loud and enveloping ecstasy-driven wall of sounds nodding to MBV and Nothing aesthetics, dipped in melancholic feedback, to build heady fuzzed-out chaotic auras of abrasive metallic swarms, icy anxious and jagged droning melodies, stirred by energetic rhythms, to challenge lost, sad hopeless vocals. As more specialized friends have written in the comments, heady shoegaze played and made the hell out of it.

  • Clare, Australia dream pop /jangle pop ‘home-recorded jangly noise’ project (formerly English Summer), Go Season “Super 8” demo single

It’s just a demo without the usual sparkling jangly guitar flourishes, based on a hypnotic metronomic beatbox and obsessive fuzzy wistful melodies and tinkling icy bright arpeggios from a vintage synth over drowsy romantic vocals, lost in a blurry dreamscape of war and champagne, enough to be enraptured by a little jewel of elusive and delicate bittersweet nostalgia.

  • Dream-pop /shoegaze project of Russian multi-instrumentalist and composer Dmitry Gruber with Nika Ámotnik (vocals, lyrics), Echoedreaming “You’re Afraid Of Me” [Single]

It’s been about ten years, maybe even more, that the Russian multi-instrumentalist and composer Dmitry Gruber navigates with ease and melodic sensitivity between different genres, mostly atmospheric and introspective, and a good amount of projects, most of the times in partnership with a female singer, Hjördis-Britt Åström, and Galatee are the ones I have always preferred though. One of the less explored is Echoedreaming, which combines, as the name suggests, reflective Dream Pop and echoing Shoegaze, whose latest single unfurls rippling glistening guitar melodies waxing and waning hypnotically, together with vibrant moody bass throbs, and skipping percussions, across the mind’s eye of daydreams, opening doorways where sad ethereal vocalizations rouse intimate confessions of anxious melancholy and angsty longing.
