Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – AUGUST 2024 – #31-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Richmond, Virginia power jangle pop 4-piece YOUNG SCUM “Lighter Blue” title track of the upcoming sophomore album on Pretty Olivia Records
Richmond‘s outwardly sun-kissed jangly power poppers return, six years after the band’s acclaimed debut album, through a refined striking sound alchemy jam-packed with prickly sparkling guitar melodies that chime and reverberate as heartfelt and nostalgic as it is imbued with a bittersweet melancholy around angsty, alienated vocals swaying in a sea of restless regret.
- Indianapolis-based Ambient /Dream-Pop /Shoegaze trio, Fern Murphy “Shapes Across the Water” single
Indianapolis atmospheric shoegazers draw lush ghostly and contemplative surreal rarefactions, stirred by soft drumming and humming basslines, swelling in an emotional whirring dizziness of subtle edgy dissonances and glistening warm curtains of reverbs, whilst feathery layered vocals fly above it all, struggling between familiar comfort and angsty uncertainty.
- Brisbane, Australia ambient /folk /ethereal /dream pop solo project of multi-instrumentalist Amber Ramsay, aka CLOUD TANGLE ”Godlike Masquerade” first single from the third full-length album ”Dreaming Again” via 4000 Records
Written by Amber Ramsay in early 2020, at the time of her debut album and over time elaborated into a stirring introspective dreamscape built with 44 layers of instruments and vocals with circular shimmers from wistful arpeggiated guitar loops, evocative shivering icy synth swells and a loose use of shifting percussive patterns, interspersed with echoing timpani rolls, to surround intimate crystalline vocals, exploring the sacrifice of an absent mind in order to ride the train of imagination.
