Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JULY 2024 – #30-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- South Wales, UK lo-fi noise pop /shoegaze project of musician James Cubitt, aka WINTER SUN “Somewhere else” single
Debut single from a 90s-inspired nostalgic, noisy and atmospheric Shoegaze solo project from South Wales fluctuates through a warped droning wistful haze weaved by ringing echoing riffs, to distort time and space around soft downtrodden vocals, struggling to leave the past behind and begin somewhere new.
- Swedish indie /noise pop /power pop band PoPo “Kids” single
First number of the year for the collection of ‘sad songs, cheap sounds, monotonous drum beats’ and sepia, blurry archival pictures’ from the enigmatic Swedish solo Indie-Pop project, with a distinctive scruffy lo-fi charm, PoPo. I seem to remember, or maybe I dreamt it, having featured a related band a while ago, but alas my memory is no longer what it used to be… Motorik beats punctuate slightly abrasive vibrant distorted guitar riffs, rippled with melancholic ringing tones that cover sad heartfelt vocals, echoing as if from a deep pit, with disconnection and doubt.
- London-based shoegaze /dream pop /doom pop duo Rain Cloud Nine “Blush” single
London ‘doom pop’ duo debuts with a deceivingly laid back dreamy tuneful song about the fleeting nature of Summer love, which unfolds through off-tempo drum beats, buzzing bass lines, and a meandering of sizzling bright and crunchy guitar riffs, ringing and grating obsessively, to wash layered angsty dreamy vocals in desire and sorrow.
