Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JULY #30-23
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Melbourne indie /jangle /bubblegum /power-pop band led by former Lucksmiths bassists and Lost and Lonesome label founder Mark Monnone, aka Monnone Alone “Loose Terrain” second single taken from their upcoming fourth album via Lost and Lonesome.
Curiously the new, as usual airy and bright, ‘country-fried bubblegum pop’ tune by Mannone Alone is introduced by the deep boing sound of a Sicilian ‘scacciapensieri’ (Jew’s harp), once ominously associated in these parts with the Mafia, then used and somehow ‘cleared’ by Morricone in 1965’s Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western “For a few dollars more”. “Loose Terrain” strides its way in a nostalgic staggering gait over swaying strums, sparkling jangly curls and whimsy keyboard frills, to elicit a winding rustic breeze around angsty yet playful atmospheric vocals and high airy back-ups, pondering the effects of another’s loose grip on reality.
- Wilmington, NC indie rock /shoegaze group led by Adam Bastug, Doggy Daycare “(forgetting) sarah marshall” single on Fort Lowell Records
Delving into early ’90s Shoegaze and Noise Rock realms, a noisy, drunk confession stirs jagged poignant melodies carved by lush, loud and hooky guitar swells, nestled amid thick abrasive riffs and saturated fuzz-laden distortions, to overwhelm strained, sore vocals with angsty romantic longings and brooding disenchanted moods.
- Bandung, Indonesia slowcore /heavy shoegaze band HUSH “Irene” single
Among a thriving number of new bands from Southeast Asia that hark back to the 90’s shoegaze sound, standing out this week is the second single by the heavy shoegazers from Bandung, Hush where stumbling drumbeats and churning basslines seamlessly underpin a dense swirling drift of sparkling, distorted, abrasive and excruciating guitar riffs, to build a simmering and intensely emotional edge for dreamy, aching confessional vocals, revealing adoration and obsession at the hands of burning desire.
