Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JULY #30-22
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Melbourne based rock’n’roll /power pop band The Prize “Wrong Side of Town” from the upcoming 4-track “Wrong Side of Town” 7″ EP via Anti Fade Records.
If in the case of Triangle Rain Club we referred to a Power-Pop entirely from the 90s with hints to Lemonheads, or Teenage Fun Club; for the Melbourne based quintet, instead, we go back to the turn of the late 70s and the start of the 80s, amid Power Pop and New Wave, to those bands, sometimes unsung, such as The Nerves/The Paul Collins Beat, The Records or 20/20 just to name a few, jam-packed of irresistible melody and youthful angst-ridden vigour that defined the genre. The 5-piece churns out an exuberant, crunchy yet catchy, rock’n’roll-laden single that matches the electricity of those trailblazers, fueled with proto-punk edge, through groovy high-energy rambling moods, that supercharge relentless driving sharp guitar riffs and sizzling feverish melodies, to sway furiously around a rapid, angsty release of narrative lyrics, warning of the dangerous and alienating vibes found on “The Wrong Side of Town.”
- Chicago, IL shoegaze /indie rock solo project of multi-instrumentalist Austin Smith, AKA Triangle Rain Club “In My Head” first single from the debut album
Chicago‘s one-man band delivers an invigorating, straightforward and catchy 90s-tinged slice of Power Pop sprinkled with Shoegaze sparkles ala Teenage Funclub, wistful and noisy at the same time, laced with a hazy slacker vibe. Urgent drums fuel nostalgic wandering abrasive guitar riffs shredding obsessive paths of regret and fear around numb husky melancholic vocals, brooding in a dark reverie about a relationship break-up.
- Jakarta, Indonesia shoegaze band formed in 2005, Hazel “Over My Head” single from the upcoming EP on Anoa Records sublabel Tarsius Records
The seemingly long lost Jakarta‘s shoegaze band Hazel re-emerges from oblivion with a brand new atmospheric and emotional-ridden new single triggered by steady vibrant rhythms along with hazy droning, distorted guitar blankets and radiating wistful glistening lines that somberly glimmer and soar, to reflect angsty waves of fear and shame atop bittersweet, downtrodden vocals releasing stubborn feelings of letting go.
