PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Perth-Boorloo / Melbourne-Naarm-based 5-piece jangly /indie pop band Spice World “Bull’s Tools” from the upcoming second LP “Purple Patch” [Rough Skies Records]
The Aussie collective returns with their captivating and stirringly heartfelt, laid-back, at times nervy, brand of jangly indie pop with a folk flair. Jaunty mid-tempo percussions sway and judder joined by crisp, tinny strummed guitars, colored by the slow-blowing bittersweet melancholy from warm, mellow clarinet accents, around straightforward, expressive male vocals and lively backups, laced with feelings of frustration and resignation.
- Toluca, Mexico Alternative Rock /Grunge /Heavy Shoegaze trio TOKYO BLAST “Shibuya” single
Newcomer Mexican noisemakers’ new single talks about how yearning for the past gets in the way of a colorful present moment euphoria.
Vibrant, dreamy, choppy female vocals battle against a chaotic, harsh, jagged haze built by loud bursts of abrasive fuzzy riffs, fueled by relentless hard-hitting drums and rapid bass throbs, to become smoothly connected amidst layers of exuberant backing cries.
- Toronto, Ontario shoegaze /space rock /dream-pop four-piece Whisper Gang “Event Horizon” single
New introspective and twilit supernova of sound from Ontario quartet that unfolds reflective emotive layers of sparkling guitar arpeggios, embracing lush, wistful female vocals, regretfully aching and yearning, swept by a cleansing interval of swelling abrasive distortions and high-pitched soaring vibrato cries, to finally fall, side by side with a loved one, into the silence of a black hole.
