Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JULY 2024 – #27-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Houston, TX post-punk /shoegaze /dark dream-pop trio Monochrome Lover “Lover” single
Houston outfit finally returns with a lush and ethereal dark dream-pop reverie shaded in crepuscular hues, to elicit a grey dreamy haze from romantic brassy synth motifs and bright sparkling crunchy and vivid guitar ringlets, underlined by subtly crisp, swaying percussion grooves and warm humming bass lines, to enrapture evocative airy female vocals through celestial angst and sensuality into a shared conclusion of ‘love is made forever’.
- Rangiora, New Zealand garage /jangle-pop /power-pop quartet (members of Transistors, Salad Boys, and T54), Best Bets “Monster” first single from the sophomore album “The Hollow Husk of Feeling” via Melted Ice Cream and Meritorio Records
Highly infectious, crunchy and bristly Power Pop ala The Replacements or Sugar, from the experienced Kiwi quartet. “Monster” releases dreamy and angsty vocals riding, with ramshackle strains, over a relentless vibrant flow of off-tempo drum beats, humming bass pulses, and abrasive ringing riffs, longing for love amid emptiness and doubt.
- South Australia-based Dream Pop /Shoegaze one-man band of songwriter, guitarist, and producer Dave Thomas, aka Hey Calamity “Waking With The Dead” from the CD album “The Stranger You Know” via Shore Dive Records
The brainchild of Guitarist /Songwriter /Producer Dave Thomas, pulling from his kaleidoscopic array of musical inspirations, deftly creates an extremely fresh and striking guitar-driven sound through a fine balance between atmospherics and immediacy, that intertwines and blends the vibrant tones of indie rock and layered shoegaze textures with the ethereal allure of dream-pop, trimmed with synthetic brushstrokes. The album is a heady ebb and flow between soaring emotive effected vocalizations, energetic electrifying surges, ecstatic introspective moments and fanciful escapes, to merge into a melancholic ‘pop’ refinement. Overall ten catchy and immersive songs that captivate amid heartfelt intimacy and nuanced nostalgia.
