Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – June/July #26-21

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Indonesian shoegaze /new wave /indie-pop band from Yogyakarta, The Bunbury – “Hide Me From The Sun” new single

The Indonesian band seem to have metabolized their bygone passion for the glory days of the ’80 -’90s British shoegaze, post-punk, jangle/indie pop, with a refined and highly creative attitude as their brand new single clearly demonstrates. Bittersweet melodies tie wistful, wandering guitar strings with rapid sneakily pulsing bass lines, peppy punchy drum beats, and shimmering backgrounded wistful brass-like hooks, around dreamy, fearful Morrissey-sque male vocals to rise and fall in restless, brooding moods of social angst.

  • Dallas, TX noise rock /shoegaze /nugaze band SEIZURE SISTER “Fawn” from the debut EP “Witness”

Debut EP replete with the Texan band’s phantasmagoric and melancholic guitar sound in which lights and shadows, sparkling cathartic energy and somber restless introspection, chase and intertwine amidst noisy grinding fuzzy riffing and crystalline lyrical arpeggios. A shining example of the above said is the mesmerizing “Fawn”, where thick hearty bass line and heavy hypnotic drum beats fuel sparkling, abrasive wistful guitar distortion, swaying in intensity along with soft haunted male vocals to merge in an intense atmospheric chorus of weightless cries cut in searing melodies, bleeding emotional pain into the dark ethereal sway of toxic tides.

  • Leeds UK & Riga LATVIA based dark noise-gaze/shoegaze outfit Last Victorian Death Squad “Kiev” from the EP “Just In Case I Never See You Again” on Shore Dive Records

Noise-gazers Last Victorian Death Squad, split between Leeds & Riga, drop a new 4-tracker less chaotic and more melodically refined, than the already convincing previous work, as always marked by a sparkling edgy noise-pop quality yet somehow loaded with unedited bursts of power-pop flair and stabbing strains of Crazy Horse-like flaming 6-string wailing, amidst blistering sharp riffage, pulsating, elastic basslines and hard-hitting drumming, over high-energy emotional male vocals. A must for the ones who fancy tumultuous loud guitars and infectious lovelorn melodies.
