Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JUNE #24-23
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Glasgow/Edinburgh DIY indie /surf /dream pop /bedroom pop project of composer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Kay Terence, aka Swiss Portrait “Paper Houses” third single from forthcoming “The Crippling Pain of Happiness” album on cassette via Star-Track
Another single of mesmerizing jangly dream-pop that shimmers with intricate and refined delicacy, through a tumultuous and emotional reflective canvas drawn by relentless prickly, ringing guitar melodies, winding harmoniously with sinuous organic humming bass ripples, and stumbling drum beats, to churn anxiously around soft shy vocal angst, delivering an intimate romantic confession into obsessive outflows of warped and glistening dreams.
- Long Beach, CA indie rock /shoegaze solo project Morning Eagle “War of Roses” single [Setterwind Records]
Solo project from California, active since 2021, with several releases to his credit, “War of Roses” is, I guess, the first real excursus into the already well-trodden classic heavy and melodic shoegaze and post-grunge paths, amidst dreamy melancholic tones, and abrasive blankets of feedback and fuzz. Restless emotional turmoil stirs up steady pounding drum beats, blistering fuzzy guitar riffs, and heavy buzzing bass lines to overcome light detached vocal angst, confessing the love is gone, with numb heartache from broken dreams.
- Oslo, Norway fuzz noise-pop band led by guitarist and vocalist Christian Dam, The Age of Colored Lizards “In Between” off of the new EP “The Fall” on Sotron Records
Proof of a very inspiring period for Oslo’s outfit, our favorite track off the new EP, “In Between” sparks off a vaguely psychedelic din of droning jangly pop laced with anxious introspective moods, spiraling over relentless sparkling whirring waves from blaring, ringing guitar riffs and light tinny tambourine shakes, to hazily reverberate and flow below heartfelt melancholic vocal longings, trying to find a better way to live, amidst merciless flows of doubt and unease.
