PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Berlin-based alt rock/psych /shoegaze four-piece YEAHRS “Out of Space” single

Swathed in ghostly fumes of ‘90s Shoegaze, the Berlin 4-piece churns out an immersive and infectiously arresting single about the isolation felt by being around a phony person, that wobbles into a hypnotic, fuzzed out haze of shuffling drum beats, humming bass lines and a pain-fueled wandering of simmering, plaintive guitar sheets, shivering around seemingly calm yet inwardly anxious vocals, gently falling amid secret female spoken words.

  • Dallas, TX-based surf rock /synth-pop bedroom artist Anthony Tobias, aka Toby “Lazy Sunday” debut single

Drawing echoes of Real Estate and Mac DeMarco, the Texas bedroom newcomer debuts with a laid-back and languid sun-dazzled surf-pop tune, streaked with sombre moods, smoothly trembles, through rippling, reverb-drenched saltwater breezes of reflective cyclical riffs, and glowing keyboard washes, etched by glistening, twangy nostalgic guitar flourishes, resonating over downtrodden, dreamy vocals, longing for sleep amid a plague of dizzying problems.

  • Gothenburg-based shoegaze /psychedelic /indie rock songwriter, musician and producer Mathias Engwall, aka llawgne “A HIT 4 U” single

Gothenburg‘s DIY singer-songwriter has a distinctive knack for delivering classic indie-pop-rock that plays with the past in a multifaceted, fresh fashion, seamlessly blessed with Swedish melodic sensibility, and peppered with shoegaze haze and psychedelic sheens. The latest single, brimming with the same infectious shimmery pop clarity as our other fave My Raining Stars, sways urgently on steady percussions, tinny energetic strums and vibrant sparkling, wistful guitar lines that jangle along with twisted keyboards, swirling atop desperate magnetic vocals, becoming highly anxious amid harsh whispers, struggling to impress someone with an obsessive need to be seen.
