Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – MAY/JUNE 2024 – #22-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- French bedroom pop /indie pop /synth-pop duo from Lille, Joni Île “In her red car” single
If I’m not mistaken, this is the first song in the English language, Marion Plouviez‘s sober and exquisite, emotional-laden guitar pop, laced with heartfelt bittersweet intimacy, this time through sweet, thoughtful nostalgic vocals, remembering a special grandmother and the secret world she lived in, to sway amid relentless vibrant guitar strums, soft percussion and airy keyboard spirals, one more time Joni Île manages to create an endearing indie pop charm with a French flair by which it is seamessly familiar to empathize and remain enthralled.
- Paris shoegaze /dreampop /alt-rock band Berezina “Time Is A Monster” single from an upcoming debut EP
The second single , “Time Is A Monster”, by genre-bending Parisian melancholic rockers triggers nervous heartfelt spoken word vocals rapidly releasing angst and pain, amid supportive back-ups and ghostly echoes, into a murky throbbing frenzy of sonorous humming basslines, meandering along with relentless vibrant streams of insistent sparkling guitar melodies, to reflect on the moody yet predictable flow of romance from bliss to doom.
- Portland, OR five piece shoegaze /dreampop band Waking Sophia “When Things Become” single
The new band from Portland re-imagines impressionistic and atmospheric, Slowdive-tinted, mesmerizing soundscapes in their first two stirring and immersive songs. “When Things Become” outlines a dark ethereal realm where sad dreamy vocals sway with inner tumultuous momentums of stumbling drum beats, gloomy meandering bass lines, and drifting and trembling mists of effect-laden wistful shimmering guitar echoes, to evoke the heavy feeling of breaking free from illusion.
