PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Mexico City alternative rock /dream pop /shoegaze three-piece band Rilev “Carmesì” single

Mexican trio sharpen their distinctive atmospheric and swirling shoegaze sounds with a grittier, grungy, heavily textured new song about faded feelings and not knowing how to let go. Dreamy vocals uneasily stretch with groovy and crunchy scraping riffs, underpinned by dragging, shuffling drums and snakingly springy bass lines, cast in a haze of droning distortion with shimmering reverberating overtones, to restlessly fall, layered with a soaring high-pitched lonesome lead, through a loud undertow of distress and hopelessness.

  • Hasselt, Belgium alternative /indie rock /shoegaze duo Only Tears “Silence” second single

Belgian newcomers serve up a dark yet crisp atmospheric mix of Shoegaze and alternative rock, trading with soft and loud dynamics in a strong melodic and emotional heft. Shuffling drumming along with humming bass lines fuel lifting and drifting expansive layers of ethereal ghostly synths, faraway plaintive reverberations and glistening guitar riffs, awash with invigorating blanketing bursts of fuzzed-out distortion, around fearful, angsty male vocals turning gloomy and angry due to an intimate betrayal.

  • Las Vegas, NV indie rock /shoegaze /dream pop DIY singer-songwriter Alex Argot “Rose Hill” single

Las Vegas songwriter with a gorgeous penchant for crafting atmospheric and nostalgic early-4AD tinged dream-pop, returns with the deeply emotional and immersive “Rose Hill,” about a deep inner sadness and insecurity. A steady hypnotic pace of spare crispy percussion punctuates a wistful vibrant stream of washy shimmering guitar riffs with lush, wistful female vocals of a vulnerable stirring sensibility, to sadly slow down alongside the plodding instrumentations into layers of lost and falling cries.
