Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – MAY 2024 – #18-24

Françoise Dorléac, “Cul De Sac” de Roman Polanski, 1966

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Leicester, UK-based DIY jangle /indie pop solo laptop recording DIY project of Neil Hill, Shopfires “Arsonist for Hire” single

After having delighted indie lovers with one of the best albums of the year so far of its kind, the new single “Arsonist for Hire” seamlessly picks up where it left off, with a pristine tune of nostalgic and melancholic guitar pop, wobbling on mesmeric rippling shimmery guitar melodies with prismatic echoing strums, trimmed by sad weeping keyboard gleams, to carry downtrodden vocals through hard times.

  • San Francisco, CA ambient /dreampop /shoegaze duo Standing Waves “A Dirty Clean” from the debut 2-track single “Beautiful Of Course”

A new enigmatic two-piece band that pledges to make us drift and float, and they do it quite well judging from the 2-piece debut, delving into energizing, reverb-soaked, atmospheric Shoegaze tropes with strong emotionally dreamy hues. “A Dirty Clean” glides away in a somber and hypnotizing swirl of piercing and ringing fuzzed-out guitar riffs, to achingly wash and echo sad angsty vocals with relentless crunchy swells of black and white obsession.

  • San Francisco psych-pop legend Kelley Stoltz “About Time” off the upcoming 18th album, “La Fleur” via Agitated (EU/UK) and Dandy Boy Records (USA)

After the sparkling jangle of the Madchesterian tribute to The Stone Roses’ drummer Reni, certainly more intimate, laidback and atmospheric is the follow-up single by the longtime staple of the Bay Area independent rock scene for almost 25 years.  “About Time”, as he let us know, is a cautionary tale about hang-ups, which unfurls on the heavenly effusion of David Roback-tinged glistening wistful guitar melodies swaying on a vibrant carpet of humming bass lines, rustling keyboards and rippling echoing shimmers, to cocoon gentle croons giving comfort to another.
