Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – APRIL 2024 – #17-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Athens, Ohio 4-piece post-punk /jangle indie pop band The Laughing Chimes – “Tomorrow’s 87” 2-track single via Slumberland Records
Pulling from the already largely mentioned early Creation Records leanings, as the Jasmine Minks or The Loft, the Paisley Underground and the mid-80s Felt period, the young Ohio band, recently expanded to a four-piece, seamlessly craft a deft melt of languid psychedelic sheen and a rich jangling guitar pop vein, equally sharp and harmonic, invigorated by a creative and loosen drum/bass rhythm section and enriched with a rather charismatic and enthralling vocal delivery ala Michael Stipe. The brand new 2-tracker is chock full of perky, punchy and sparkling 6-string melodies, nostalgic and vibrant “Tomorrow 87”, spiralling in radiant “twisterella” like trails, layered with light glittering keyboard veils and alluring female backups from the newcomer, angsty and obsessive instead “The Apologist Effigy”, reverberating with hypnotizing outpourings of stinging chord magnetism and deeply heartfelt vocals, both conjure up impressive guitar pop songwriting prowess.
- Costa Rica dream pop /shoegaze 4-piece Adiós Cometa “FDA 94′” single
Less fluid and more erratic and distorted than the previous single, “FDA 94′” is a dark relationship song about hanging on to the past, that floats suspended on echoing emotive exhales of reverb-filled, scorching ringing guitar sheets, layering over slow stumbling drum beats and pulsing grumbling bass lines. whilst sad defeated vocals, lost in regretful memories, rise into aching screams before a brief shift into introspective clarity occurs, then surge again into vibrant throbbing sparkling turmoil.
- South Korea-based dreamy surf-tinged jangle /bedroom pop from Scottish musician David Skimming, Lunar Isles “After Sun” single
New single of delicious Surf-tinged bedroom pop, this time laced with a laidback and breezy, sun-dappled Balearic bent, hi-hat-fueled soft tight percussions caress emotive glistening guitar melodies, glittering over a reflective dithering sea of lilting twinkling vibraphone-like droplets, subtly washed in humming synths, to gently melt together over dreamy, lost, and hopeless vocals, echoed by sad distant cries, floating through fading memories of obsession and anxiety.
